Chairperson
Dr Nkaki Matlala MSc, MMed(Surgery), FCS(SA). Nkaki is a qualified surgeon. He was deputy president of the National Medical and Dental Association, an alternative medical association during the apartheid era. He was active in overseeing the mental and physical health of apartheid detainees .He is a member of the Presidential Medical Panel, responsible for the Presidential health care. He is also former member of the SAMA Private Practice Committee.
After several years in surgical academia and private surgical practice, Dr Matlala took up a position as a director of clinical relations at Mediclinic Limited .He is presently the Chief Clinical Officer of Mediclinic(SA)and sits on its board. He also sits on several company boards including Phodiso Holdings; Hospital Association of South Africa; Ububele Holdings . He is also chairman of the Umnotho We Sizwe Group, a junior mining company.
Dr Matlala is a member of the following professional associations,viz SAMA, South African Association of Surgeons and the Trauma Society Of South Africa.He is also a reservist Major in the South African Medical Health Services (SAMHS).

Deputy Chairperson
Dr Keith Shongwe is a former deputy director–general of the Department of Communications, ICT International Affairs & Trade where his area of focus was in the field of information technology and services. He completed his tertiary education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal with an MBCHB. He also holds a BSc in biology and chemistry, and a CDE diploma in education, both from the University of Swaziland. He holds an advancement management programme certificate with Wits Business School. Keith is now a member of the Life Healthcare group.

Treasurer
Tienie van den Berg is currently the manager of Zuid-Afrikaans Hospital. He started his career in the private hospital industry in 1989 as manager of Faerie Glen Hospital and previously served on the Hasa Board from 1997 to 1999. Tienie obtained a Bcom (Acc) degree at the Potchefstroom University in 1982. He is married and has two children. Tienie is the honorary treasurer at HASA.

Chief Executive Officer
Adv. K. Worrall-Clare is also the Chairman of the Private Health Forum (PHF) which represents the interests of private health within the Republic of South Africa. He is a respected commentator on health related law with numerous academic publications. He has also taught courses in healthcare policy and ethics.
Kurt has the following degrees and qualifications: BA (Humanities), Postgraduate LLB, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Auditing and Criminal Justice as well as an additional postgraduate diploma in Applied Ethics (Biomedical) from the University of the Witwatersrand.
In October 1998 he was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court. He lectured part-time at the University of Durban-Westville in the Faculty of Public Law and at the University of Natal (Durban) in the Faculty of Procedural Law before joining Hasa as an Executive Officer. In his work on legislative development and interpretation, he formalised the concept of a Children’s Commissioner which was initially considered for the Provincial Constitution of KwaZulu-Natal, and currently enshrined in the Provincial Constitution of the Western Cape. Before joining Hasa he also served as special legal advisor to several members of parliament.
He was also one of 47 international young achievers recognised for outstanding “social entrepreneurship”. This achievement saw the young Kurt appointed as a member of the International Common Futures Forum. His interests include mental health parity, writing, academic research and genealogy.

Dr Victor Litlhakanyane (Netcare)
Dr V L Litlhakanyane obtained his MB, Ch B from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1988, Masters in Medicine (Radiotherapy) from the University of the Free State in 1994, Masters in Business Administration in Health Care from the University of the Free State in 2001. He also holds a certificate in health services management from Clark Atlanta University in the USA and a postgraduate diploma in health management from the university of Cape Town.
Dr Litlhakanyane is registered with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner and radiation oncology specialist and is an Associate of the College of Radiation Oncologists. He received the Oliver Tambo fellowship in Health leadership in 1996. Dr Litlhakanyane worked as an intern and medical officer at Pelonomi hospital from 1988 to 1990. He worked for a few months in the private sector and in 1991 returned to the public service to specialise in radiation oncology. With the advent of democracy he was appointed as the Chief Director for health service in the Free State provincial government in 1995. He was promoted to the position of Superintendent General and head of the department of health in the Free State from the 1st April 2001 to December 2004. He is presently the Stakeholder Relations Executive Director for the private healthcare group, Netcare. He is married with two children (twins) aged 16 years.

Melanie Da Costa has been with Netcare for just over two years as Director of Health Policy. Before joining Netcare Melanie spent 12 years in the investment industry as either a stock broking healthcare analyst, a fund manager running global and local funds investment in healthcare and information technology assets and later as head of research for multinational stock broker HSBC. Melanie has a MCom and a CFA.

Roly Buys (Medi-Clinic)
Roly Buys is a member of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on NHI. Buys, Medi-clinic’s General Manager: Funder Relations & Contracting is an alumnus of Ixopo High and holds a B.compt accounting degree (Unisa).
Roly had been part of the private hospital sector (bar a stint in the medical aid industry) since 1984 when he joined Vaalmed. He retunred to the provider system with Medi-Clinic as the Executive: Funder Relations and Contracting in 1998.

Biren Valodia (Medi-Clinic)
Biren Valodia is 40 years old, with two children, boys, aged 7 and 11. He enjoys music, photography, cycling and running. His career reflects hard work, reliability, competence and confidence underscored by personal commitment and performance.
He holds a B. Pharm from the University of the Western Cape, B. (B&A) Hons and MBA from the University of Stellenbosch. He completed an executive development programme (EDP) from Manchester Business School. He held the position of Director of Operations and Human Resources which in 1993-1998 was one of the largest retail pharmacy groups in South Africa. After completing his MBA, he joined Anderson Consulting as a Senior Business Analyst specialising in strategy. He worked in a number of industries; from banking, retail, insurance, government, shipping, as well as pharmaceutical and health.
In 1999 he joined Sanlam Health as Senior Manager, Head of Medicine Management. He drove Sanlam Health's Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) Programme, where he focused primarily on risk management, implementing various business models and leading edge tools that bring sustained profitability and service excellence to all business partners.
When Sanlam Health became part Medscheme Holdings Limited in 2001 he was appointed to Medscheme Integrated Care division, now known as Solutio Health Risk Management, as Divisional Director, heading up the Medicine and Disease Management programmes. In addition to his role within Solutio he was appointed to the position of Executive Director of Medscheme (Pty) Ltd as well as Managing Director of Interpharm Data Systems (Pty) Ltd in 2004. In 2005 he was appointed to the board of Aids for Aids (Pty) Ltd.
In January 2006 he was appointed to the board of Medi-Clinic Limited as Director of Corporate Marketing and Communication.

Otto Wypkema (Arwyp Medical Centre)
Otto Wypkema (46) is the Managing Director of Arwyp Medical Centre, the largest independently owned private hospital in South Africa and also the first private hospital in Africa to be ISO 9001:2000 certificated. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of National Hospital Network currently with a membership of 92 hospitals. He started his career in the healthcare industry in 1985. Otto has five daughters and a son and enjoys flying in his spare time.

Dr Diliza Mji (Ethekwini Hospital & Heart Centre)
Dr Diliza Mji is chairperson of Capensis Management, owners of Ethekwini Hospital & Heart Centre, and a married father of three. In 1979 he graduated from the University of Natal Medical School with an MBChB. In 1987 he was admitted as a Specialist General Surgeon (FCS (SA). Dr Mji has always been active in South African politics. He had held the vice president and president positions of SASO as a student activist. As a doctor, he was president of NAMDA. He has grown with the ANC, holding key positions at branch level, and continues to be an active member of the organization. Dr Mji is a businessman in his own right holding directorships and shares in both listed and unlisted companies. His passion remains healthcare and the Ethekwini Hospital and Heart Centre is the realization of a dream.

Andre Meiring (Psychiatric Focus Forum)
Andre Meiring is an alumnus of the University of Pretoria and a Charterd Accountant. He is a Chairman of the Psychiatric Focus Forum and has been with Denmar Specialist Psychiatric Hospital for just over four years as the Managing Director. Before joining Denmar he worked in the banking sector following a stint at PriceWaterhouseCoopers where he did his accountancy articles. Andre is fond of wildlife, travelling and sports.

Ridwaan Allie is an alumnus of the University of Cape Town and an accountant. He is the Managing Director of Midmed Hospital Holdings in the Western Cape.

Ahmed Nana (Lenmed Health Group)
Ahmed A Nana studied at the University of Durban Westville during 1980 and 1981 and graduated from Unisa with a B.Compt degree in 1983. During 1981 he served as Vice-Chairman of the Muslim Students Association. Nana obtained an Hons B.Compt and CTA from Unisa in 1984.
In 1986 he was admitted as a member of the Transvaal Society of Chartered Accountants and SA Institute of Chartered Accountants. He is also a member of the SA Institute of Healthcare Managers. He completed his articles in 1985. He joined Lenmed Clinic as Clinic Manager in 1986. He is currently Financial Director of the Lenmed Health Group.
Nana is married with four children and his hobbies include collecting bonsais and koi fish.

Adv. K. Worrall-Clare is the CEO of HASA, and also temporarily holds the position of Executive Officer: Legal Affairs. He is responsible for managing the strategic and operational needs of HASA. Worrall-Clare, a respected commentator on health related law, also renders legal advice to members of the association. He has numerous academic publications and training manuals under his belt.
Worrall-Clare continues to research health related law and policy, and in particular the development of a human rights-based approach to healthcare provision. He has a special interest in minors’ rights to privacy and confidentiality especially with informed consent. His studies concentrate on biomedical ethics in the private hospital sector and, in this regard, has completed a postgraduate diploma in Applied Ethics.

The annual Hasa Awards of Excellence are part of the Ministerial Healthcare Awards. This year's theme is Quality is Excellence. The process to find the best of the best in the private hospital industry is nearing its end. The Health Excellence Awards 2010 will take place in November 2010 and the deadline date for submission of entries is 07 October 2010.

The Children’s Act 38 of 2005 (as amended). How does it affect healthcare?
Several outstanding provisions of the Children’s Act [Act 38 of 2005] have become operational. The relevant Government Gazette has made the date upon which the law became operational as being 01 April 2010.
