Private sector hospitals await NHI plans

Thursday, 4 June 2009: Addressing the annual Hospital Association of SA (HASA) in Durban, HASA chairman, Nkaki Matlala said the private hospital sector looked forward to working with government to develop a sustainable model for National Health Insurance (NHI).

“We cannot sit on the periphery while the future of healthcare is debated,” he said.

Matlala said the private hospital sector was keenly awaiting the draft NHI document from the ruling party and was ready to contribute to improving healthcare across the nation.

“As a sector, we have the skills and experience to help improve the quality of care across the country,” he says. “We look forward to crystallising a position that’s positive for healthcare.”

Matlala pointed out that SA’s private hospital groups had competed against international healthcare providers to win contracts to service patients in national health systems around the world. Private sector hospitals had also been rated amongst the top five in the world by the Monitor Group.

Matlala said any planning towards an NHI system should not only focus on the inputs, such as financial aspects, technology and infrastructural improvements that will lead to improved access, but also the quality of care.

“If quality doesn’t improve, it’s not much use for the nation,” he said.  “We also believe that NHI must bring about change.  Our people must perceive change at the point of service in terms of quality.”
